At our Learning Center, we want to share not only products and care tips, but also the wisdom of people who have lived their entire lives with animals. Few voices carry as much weight as Vom Hismerh, a breeder who has spent more than 60 years with German Shepherds. At 65 years old, he’s owned nearly 20 Shepherds and continues to share insights that only a lifetime of experience can teach.
Why German Shepherds Leave a Mark
One of the first things he told us is something every Shepherd owner seems to agree on: once you’ve had a German Shepherd, you’ll always want another. Their loyalty, intelligence, and devotion to family leave an impression that lasts a lifetime.
Structure and Standards Matter
Vom Hismerh explains that the German Shepherd isn’t just about looks—it’s about function. Proper body proportions and correct angulation are what give the breed its effortless, powerful movement. While puppies may grow a little awkward at times, he reminds us that this is part of their natural development and not always a sign of hip problems, as many new owners fear.
Coats, Colors, and Myths
We also learned something surprising about coats. Many people assume long-haired Shepherds shed more, but he points out that long coats often drop less hair into the home, since the dead hairs stay in the coat until brushed out. From sable to pure black to the classic black-and-red, he values rich pigmentation as part of the breed’s beauty and standard.
Character Above All
Above everything else, Vom Hismerh emphasizes temperament. The best Shepherds are clear-headed, confident, and protective without unnecessary aggression. With the right genetics and socialization, they make ideal family dogs—loyal to children, bonded to their owners, and stable in all kinds of environments.
Care and Health Lessons
One of his strongest messages is about raising puppies responsibly. Overfeeding, over-exercising, or letting young dogs jump too much can damage their joints before they’re fully developed. With patience, proper nutrition, and daily activity, German Shepherds can live long, healthy lives—often 11 to 14 years or more.
These are just some of the lessons we’ve taken away from our time with Vom Hismerh. His experience with German Shepherds runs deep, and the way he talks about the breed shows why so many people never stop at just one.
